How I survive a cold 😷
I thought I had
escaped...everyone at work has been ill and I hadn't...then on Wednesday
morning after going to the gym the night before I woke up with a
stonking cold.
Being the least bit impressed I went out on my lunch break that day to stock up on what I deem my essentials to survive a cold and hopefully end it quicker.
Sambucol Black Elderberry liquid (click to link to item on Boots webpage) - it can also be purchased from Holland & Barrett and Amazon, but Boots have it on offer at the mo.
This I take three times a day (one 5ml teaspoon with each meal). It doesn't taste offensive and I find that it really helps to shorten the length of a cold. When I'm ill I want to ply my body with as many vitamins and minerals as possible to give my body a helping hand to fight the germs from within.
Listerine Mouthwash (or any antibacterial mouthwash) (click to link to item on Boots website) - might be cheaper from your local supermarket.
When I'm ill I disinfect my toothbrush daily (rather than weekly), so I purchased a strong mouthwash to do this. It was something that dawned on me a few years ago that we brush our teeth with a toothbrush and we rinse the brush with the tap at the end which isn't hygienic in the long run.
When we're ill we brush our teeth which are in our mouth and where germs live and grow. So when you brush your teeth in the morning you add germs to that toothbrush that you then reintroduce to your mouth at the end of the day, plus more germs that you gained during the day!
In the idea that "coughs and sneezes spread diseases" every time you brush your teeth when you're ill you are basically just reinfecting yourself. So every time I brush my teeth I then put my toothbrush head into some Listerine, which I leave it soaking in.
I use a small glass measuring glass (shot glass size) which I rinse out with Listerine as well.
Lavender Essential Oil
I use a water diffuser quite regularly in my bedroom, especially in the winter months to help combat the drying nature of central heating.
(Link to the diffuser I use on Amazon, there are so many others out there).
I struggle to relax and sleep when I'm ill, so I always get the Lavender oil out and put it in my diffuser. The concept of relaxing I find really important when I'm unwell as getting through the workday can be really hard (plus my sick leave record is shot to sh*t so I can't not go in).
The diffuser is really quiet so I don't have to worry about the noise it makes and I'll lay in bed with this on and either read or watch something on Netflix.
If I'm struggling to breathe I'll chuck in some Olbas oil instead to open up the airways.
Hopi Ear Candles
The brand I use are Otosan and I buy these from either a Chinese Herbal Medicine shop or Holland & Barrett.
Since I was a child whenever I get a cold it always goes to my ears and they ache and become congested too.
To help relieve the pressure I will use ear drops to loosen and soften any ear wax (sorry for the gross picture right there!!). After I will use ear candles to draw out anything in my ears. The experience is really relaxing. I have my mum on hand to light them once I put one in my ear and also to extinguish it at the end.
To ensure that these are effective you need to make sure that they are properly inserted into the ear to ensure that the earwax is drawn out.
It is bizarre to say, and you'll probably think me mad, but after I have used ear candles I feel like I can breathe better. Ear nose and throat are all connected so I find that looking after my ears can really help in dealing with a cold.
Metatone Tonic (click to link to item on Boots website or Amazon)
The marketing line of this product is "For use after illness such as colds and flu. Helps restore health and vitality."
I use this from the start of a cold to help me push through. It tastes like mulled wine (whaaaaa?!) which is nice as these sort of things tend to taste absolutely vile. It does contact a small amount of ethanol, so be mindful of this. I have two 5ml spoons with each meal and this follows on from the Sambucol with me wanting to put as many vitamins and minerals into my cold-fighting body.
I also take an Iron supplement with added vitamins as well as a Vitamin D tablet as now winter is coming I won't see daylight on a workday!
Hope this helps you as much as it does me!

By visiting the dentist for a dental cleaning and checkup regularly, you can ensure good oral hygiene and protect your teeth and remove any plaque that has hardened and become too tough to remove through brushing. goodsamdental.org
